ST Kinetics Scores A Double First For The Environment With Hybrid Bus And Hybrid Port Prime Mover Solutions

Southeast Asia's first diesel-electric hybrid bus and the world's first port prime mover with hybrid hydraulic drive to be put on trial with local operators after demonstrating fuel savings of up to 30% and 20% respectively

Singapore, 16 November 2009 - ST Kinetics, the land systems arm of ST Engineering, today launched Southeast Asia's first diesel-electric hybrid bus for transport operators and the world's first commercially ready Hybrid Hydraulic Drive (HHD) enhanced port prime mover (PPM) for port operators.

The launch event, held at Changi Exhibition Centre, Singapore, was officiated by Dr Lim Wee Kiak, Member of Parliament (Sembawang GRC) and Chairman, Transport Government Parliamentary Committee.

The first ever diesel-hybrid electric city bus in Singapore has achieved fuel savings of up to 30% through more than 10,000 km of road trials; while the world's first commercially ready HHD incorporated PPM has resulted in reduction in fuel consumption of up to 20%.  Both hybrid systems have also demonstrated lower emissions and life cycle maintenance costs.  With more than an estimated 3,500 public buses and over 1,000 port prime movers in Singapore, such green solutions can translate into significant gains for our environment.

At the launch, ST Kinetics inked a strategic agreement with Xiamen King Long whereby ST Kinetics' hyPower hybrid electric technology would be integrated into King Long's low-floor city buses.
A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was also signed amongst ST Kinetics, King Long Singapore and Brickston Transport Service, regarding the local transport operator's intent to trial a fleet of hybrid diesel-electric buses.

For the HHD PPM, ST Kinetics signed a MOU with Cargotec to incorporate ST Kinetics' energy regenerative hyPower HHD systems into Cargotec's PPMs for sale globally.  A MOU was also signed between ST Kinetics and PSA Singapore Terminals (PSA) regarding its intent to trial the hyPower HHD system on a fleet of PSA's port prime movers.

"PSA is committed to seeking new and environmentally-friendly ways of managing its operations in a sustainable manner.  The Hybrid Hydraulic Drive Port Prime Mover project is a promising step in our concerted efforts towards a greener society.  We value our partnership with like-minded partners including ST Kinetics, and look forward to exploring more pro-environment technologies for our terminals while providing shipping customers with continued high service levels." ~ SAN Shang Hou, Head of Equipment Engineering, PSA Singapore Terminals

The launch of the green vehicles is a cumulation of ST Kinetics' decade long investments in hybrid technologies.  Other hybrid vehicles that ST Kinetics had launched include the Hybrid Electric Tow Tractor currently in use at Changi International Airport Terminal 3; the Hybrid Electric Excavator launched in China; and the Ultra Temp Hybrid Refrigerated Truck Body in production in US.

"ST Kinetics has been developing electric and hybrid solutions to help address global concerns regarding the environment. We are pleased to announce with today's launch that we now have mature and commercially viable solutions based on advanced hybrid-electric and hybrid-hydraulic configurations for a wide selection of vehicle types with high cycles of 'stop and go' as part of their daily operation." ~ SEW Chee Jhuen, President, ST Kinetics
