ST Engineering Annual Report 2024

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS 31 DECEMBER 2024 (CURRENCY – SINGAPORE DOLLARS UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED) B6 Taxation (continued) Recognition and measurement Current tax Current tax is measured at the amount expected to be recovered from or paid to the tax authorities, using tax rates and tax laws that are enacted or substantively enacted by the reporting date. Deferred tax Deferred tax is accounted for in respect of temporary differences arising from differences between the carrying amount of assets and liabilities and the corresponding tax base. Deferred tax liabilities are recognised for all taxable temporary differences. Deferred tax assets are recognised for all deductible temporary differences, carry-forward of unused tax assets and unused tax losses, to the extent that it is probable that sufficient future taxable profits will be available to utilise them. However, deferred tax assets and liabilities are not recognised for: • temporary differences on the initial recognition of assets or liabilities in a transaction that is not a business combination which affects neither accounting nor taxable profit or loss; and • taxable temporary differences arising on the initial recognition of goodwill. Deferred tax assets and deferred tax liabilities are offset, if a legally enforceable right exists and they relate to taxes levied by the same tax authority on the same taxable entity. Current tax and deferred tax are recognised in profit or loss except to the extent that it relates to a business combination, or items recognised directly in equity or in other comprehensive income. Estimates and judgement: Income taxes The Group is subject to income taxes in Singapore and jurisdictions where it has foreign operations. Judgement is required in determining the worldwide provision for income taxes and in assessing whether deferred tax balances are recognised on the statement of financial position. Changes in circumstances will alter expectations, which may impact the amount of provision for income taxes and deferred tax balances recognised. Estimates and judgement: Recovery of deferred tax assets Deferred tax assets are recognised for tax losses and deductible temporary differences to the extent that it is probable that sufficient future taxable profits will be available to utilise them. Judgement and estimates are required to determine the amount of deferred tax assets that can be recognised, based upon the likely timing and the level of future taxable profits in excess of the profits arising from the reversal of existing taxable temporary differences and subsidiaries that have suffered a loss in either the current or preceding period in the tax jurisdiction to which the deferred tax asset relates. 159 CORPORATE OVERVIEW PERFORMANCE REVIEW SUSTAINABILITY FINANCIAL REPORT
