SBS Transit and ST Kinetics Collaborate to Strengthen Rail Engineering and Maintenance Capabilities

Singapore, 26 April 2017 – SBS Transit Ltd and ST Kinetics, have entered into a strategic partnership by way of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate and strengthen maintenance and engineering capabilities for rail operations in Singapore.                    

The signing of the MOU today by Mr Gan Juay Kiat, CEO, SBS Transit and Dr Lee Shiang Long, President, ST Kinetics, marks the start of a strategic partnership between the two companies where SBS Transit will leverage on ST Kinetic’s strong capabilities in testing and repair, maintenance, engineering and obsolescence management to support SBS Transit’s rail operations,  while ST Kinetics will be presented with the opportunity to enter the rail maintenance industry and further develop its technical capabilities. 

The partners will collaborate on the use of automation and robotics solutions to improve operational productivity and efficiency.  The MOU also covers data analytics among others to further improve the resilience of SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) infrastructure.

Mr Gan said: "This collaboration will help us deepen our capabilities in rail repairs and maintenance. We are always looking at new and innovative ways to further improve rail reliability and provide our commuters with a robust system."

While we are new to the rail segment, we are an experienced and established player, having built up a strong engineering base in design and development of various platforms, through-life management and systems integration for 50 years,” said Dr Lee, President of ST Kinetics. “we look forward to working with SBS Transit, a leading rail operator in Singapore, and leveraging collective capabilities to contribute to Singapore’s fast growing rail network.

Following from the MOU, the first agreement was signed today in which ST Kinetics will provide expertise and services to refurbish electronics components that are used in SBS Transit’s trains on the North East Line as well as the Light Rail Vehicles on the Sengkang-Punggol Light Rail Transit systems. 

This electronics refurbishment contract was signed by Mr Simon Lane, Executive Vice President, Rail, SBS Transit and Mr Tan Peng Kuan, Executive Vice President, Singapore Business, ST Kinetics.

SBS Transit is a leading bus and rail operator in Singapore. Every day, we carry about three million passengers on our extensive bus and rail network. Phase 3, which is the last stage, of the DTL is scheduled to be opened for passenger service in the second half of 2017.
