Ong Wee Kim, Assistant Engineer, Digital Academy at Digital Systems, is on his way to mastering cloud management after a month of intensive training and becoming a Nutanix Certified Professional. He is now set on taking a deep dive into the cloud and tapping more learning opportunities at ST Engineering.

Q: Tell us more about your training in cloud management at ST Engineering.

I’m currently with ST Engineering’s Digital Academy. I've received intensive training in cloud computing, such as cloud security and compliance requirements, deploying containerised applications using Docker and Kubernetes, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Ansible.

Although it was tough to grasp technical concepts at first, I was committed to improving my skills and spent a few hours practising bash scripting every day for three months. My efforts paid off when I obtained the Nutanix Certified Professional – Multicloud Infrastructure 5 certification, demonstrating my abilities in deploying, administering, and troubleshooting Nutanix products in the enterprise cloud.

In addition to cloud, I’ve also learnt about DevOps.

Q: What made you want to learn more about DevOps engineering?

A cloud engineer designs, builds and maintains the infrastructure of cloud-based systems, while a DevOps engineer combines software development and operations processes to ensure the software is delivered quickly and reliably.

While I am keen to hone my expertise in cloud engineering, DevOps is a field I would like to explore more as I progress in my career. During my training, I was tasked to analyse customer feedback to improve DevOps structures, models and processes. My objectives were to identify the bad practices used throughout a software development cycle and develop strategies to enhance the process.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy collaborating and sharing ideas with my colleagues to create better solutions. In my experience, we can accomplish a lot more when we put our heads together. I also appreciate how my job provides me with a challenging and dynamic environment to learn and grow.

Q: What do you hope to achieve next at ST Engineering?

I hope to continuously improve my technical skills and knowledge, stay updated with the industry trends and technologies, and seek new opportunities to grow. I look forward to taking on more responsibilities and leadership roles in my team to contribute to the Group’s goal of harnessing technology for a more secure and sustainable world.
