Reimagining How We Live and Work through Unmanned Technologies

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) have the potential to improve perimeter security surveillance, revolutionise delivery services, and augment site inspections for various industries.

Lim Yu Yu, Assistant Principal Engineer, Unmanned Air Systems, Systems & Software, Commercial Aerospace, shares how he plays a part in revolutionising traditional operations.

Q: Tell us more about what you do at ST Engineering.

At ST Engineering, my role involves designing and developing drone solutions, also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). A key part of what I do requires leveraging AI and data analytics to seamlessly integrate complex UAV systems with IT infrastructure.

Collaborating closely with my team, we create versatile and customisable UAS solutions for key applications in security, survelillance, inspection and middle-to-last mile deliveries. These solutions empower critical assessments, advanced troubleshooting, and informed decision-making for our customers.

Q: What are some real-world applications of your work?

Monitoring water quality in Singapore’s reservoirs used to rely on manual collection of water samples. We created a novel way of doing it differently, using DroNet.

DroNet provides real-time and accurate analysis of water bodies without the need for collecting water samples. It begins by generating a flight path using ST Engineering’s proprietary flight control software. As the drone flies on this path, its electro-optical and hyperspectral sensors remotely analyse the entire water body, delivering comprehensive water quality and water activity data to surveyors. By operating remotely, analyses can be easily carried out regularly or even on an on-demand basis to retrieve the most up-to-date data. Imagine if similar unmanned technologies can be applied to forest or agriculture monitoring!

Q: What excites you about working in ST Engineering?

Being a part of ST Engineering has been an enriching journey for me. Not only do I get to work on a diverse portfolio of projects in commercial and defence, I also receive opportunities for assignments in various countries. Such experiences really broaden my exposure and fuel my passion in aerospace and unmanned technologies.
