Singapore, 17 March 2023 - ST Engineering today announced that its Urban Solutions business has secured a turnkey rail services contract worth over $430m from the Kaohsiung City Mass Rapid Transit Bureau for the new Kaohsiung MRT Red Line South Extension (also known as the Siaogang-Linyuan Line), as part of a larger contract with consortium partner Hyundai Rotem. This contract expands ST Engineering Urban Solutions’ rail footprint in Taiwan, adding to its global track record of 200 smart metro projects in more than 50 cities.

ST Engineering Urban Solutions will lead systems integration and overall project management for the Red Line South Extension project and provide rail electronics solutions including Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, communications system, automatic fare collection system, platform screen doors and depot equipment. It will work with its partners to deliver the signalling system and the bulk substation, while Hyundai Rotem will provide the rolling stock and power supply. ST Engineering Urban Solutions’ contracted scope is expected to start by mid-2023, over a period of nine years.

“This contract builds on our long-standing partnership with the Kaohsiung City Mass Rapid Transit Bureau and represents a strong vote of confidence in our project management, systems integration and engineering capabilities. We are excited about the opportunity to lead the Red Line South Extension project which will enhance connectivity in Southern Kaohsiung, catalyse economic growth and improve quality of life for the local communities,” said Chew Men Leong, President of Urban Solutions at ST Engineering.

A major transportation infrastructure project in the Kaohsiung City Government’s Southern Taiwan Development Plan, the Red Line South Extension is a 11.27km line that comprises six underground stations and one elevated station. It will run through three national industrial parks in Southern Taiwan and connect to Kaohsiung MRT’s existing Red and Orange Lines when it is completed in 2030.

ST Engineering Urban Solutions has a 30-year strong track record in implementing rail projects in Taiwan, supported by a growing skilled workforce. In the past two years, ST Engineering Urban Solutions won contracts to deliver full turnkey rail services for the Kaohsiung MRT Yellow Line and the Kaohsiung MRT Red Line North Extension, as part of consortiums.
