Designing Next-Gen Platform Screen Doors for Smarter Transit

Every day, metro systems move millions of people across the world, with engineers diligently working in the background to upkeep the systems that enhance urban mobility. Among them is Ryan Khoo, a mechanical design engineer on the Mobility Rail team at Urban Solutions.

Ryan works on the next generation of AI-driven AGIL® platform screen doors (PSDs), focusing on mechanical innovations that support scalable, modular designs. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team, he helps bring together engineering precision and emerging technologies to enable reliable and efficient urban transportation.

Q: What’s the most rewarding part of your role?
Seeing the designs I’ve worked on come to life. When a crate arrives with the latest prototype, and I finally get to test something that has taken months to develop, it’s incredibly fulfilling. It’s a role that blends hands-on engineering with real-world impact, knowing that our work will improve daily commutes for millions of people.

Q: What makes the next-generation AGIL PSDs different from the previous version?
Our next-gen AGIL PSDs are a complete redesign based on real-world feedback and supercharged with AI. We re-engineered every mechanical and software component to be safer, more reliable, and backwards compatible, allowing seamless integration with existing rail systems. With modular hardware and AI-powered predictive maintenance features, they are easier to deploy and maintain, helping rail operators modernise with minimal disruption.

Q: What’s the culture like at ST Engineering?
My teammates are efficient and competent, and they bring fresh perspectives and energy through their diverse experiences. We move fast and trust each other to get things done. Working alongside colleagues who are experts in their fields has been a great learning experience for me.

Q: Where do you see yourself in five years?
I hope to deepen my expertise as a technical specialist and continue contributing to innovations in our PSD systems. I also enjoy exploring different parts of the business, from vendor management to project planning. There’s so much room to grow here, and I’m excited about the opportunities that lie ahead!
