Enabling Better Preparedness in Public Safety

Enabling Better Preparedness in Public Safety

From fighter jet to tank simulators, Ken Lee, Technical Director at ST Engineering’s Digital Systems business, has spent over a decade delivering training and simulation solutions for military operators.

Today, he finds purpose in a different kind of mission. Leading a team of over 30 developers across different simulators, he’s now helping first responders, security forces and public agencies stay better prepared for unexpected situations.

Q: How do you harness technology and innovation for real-world impact?
Our training simulations are built to strengthen problem-solving and decision-making – the skills most critical in complex operations. We achieve this by applying advanced technologies like AI and machine learning to develop training environments that are realistic, adaptive, and constantly evolving.

One example is our Intelligent Computer Generated Forces (iCGF) solution, which uses multi-agent deep learning to generate virtual opponents that think and behave like real adversaries. Unlike traditional simulations with fixed scripts, our entities grow more sophisticated with each interaction. This keeps scenarios unpredictable and challenges trainees to think on their feet, ensuring they’re better prepared for real-world challenges.

Q: What excites you most about being part of ST Engineering?
ST Engineering has given me many opportunities for growth and development. I first joined the company through a university attachment more than 14 years ago. Since then, I’ve taken on diverse roles in system development, integration, and maintenance. Each of these chapters taught me something new and helped shape me into a more well-rounded engineer and leader.

Q: How has ST Engineering supported your career journey?
My teammates are efficient and competent, and they bring fresh perspectives and energy through their diverse experiences. We move fast and trust each other to get things done. Working alongside colleagues who are experts in their fields has been a great learning experience for me.

Beyond technical growth, the global exposure has been equally invaluable. I’ve had the chance to attend international trade shows such as I/ITSEC to learn about emerging trends in different markets and to collaborate with overseas colleagues who bring diverse perspectives to the table. These opportunities have deepened my technical expertise in an industry that’s constantly changing.

Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to enter this field?
Stay on your toes and look out for learning opportunities! The field of training simulation is shifting rapidly, especially with the rise of disruptive technologies like AI. The ability to combine deep technical expertise with a strong understanding of domain needs opens the door to impactful, real-world applications — whether in defence, public safety, or beyond.
