Singapore, 17 June 2020 – ST Engineering today announced that its smart lighting solution and on-demand autonomous buses have been recognised as winning solutions for its customers at the IDC Smart City Asia Pacific Awards (SCAPA) 2020. The Awards recognise the top Smart City initiatives across the Asia Pacific region (excluding Japan) that utilise leading-edge digital technologies and solutions that have enabled rapid urban transformation across cities in the Asia Pacific.

Singapore bagged three out of the 19 awards presented this year, with ST Engineering’s technologies behind two of the winning projects.

A thriving smart city, Singapore serves as an excellent living lab for public-private sector collaborations to co-innovate and testbed technologies, technology readiness and community adoption, to solve urban problems. The winning solutions in smart lighting and on-demand autonomous buses are provided to the Housing & Development Board (HDB), as well as the Ministry of Transport (MOT) and Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) respectively.

Winning Projects

(1) Smart Lighting for Public Housing Estates (Housing & Development Board) – Winner of the Smart Buildings/Smart Tech Parks 

Smart lighting is the future of lighting and an integral part of Singapore’s Smart Nation drive. The winning project by the HDB, which features ST Engineering’s smart lighting solution developed together with HDB, was installed in the common areas of Teck Ghee, a housing estate in Singapore, in areas such as carparks and gardens, stairwells and common corridors in public housing blocks. The system comprises smart motion sensors that are wirelessly connected in secured networks, and analytics capabilities that automatically adjust the luminosity of about 10,000 LED lights in response to the motion detected, thus bringing about up to 60 percent energy reduction compared with conventional LED lighting.

Aside from providing an anticipatory and more comfortable lighting experience for residents, the solution collects and analyses data on lighting performance, enabling the prediction of potential faults and proactive maintenance to be carried out.

(2) On-Demand Autonomous Buses (Ministry of Transport Singapore and Sentosa Development Corporation) – Winner of the Transportation – Connected & Autonomous Vehicles, Public Transit, Ride-Hailing/Ride-Sharing category

In collaboration with the MOT and SDC, ST Engineering completed Singapore’s first on-demand autonomous shuttle public trial on Sentosa Island from August to November 2019, carrying more than 5,000 passengers.

During the trial, visitors were able to hail a ride on one of the four autonomous vehicles, comprising two minibuses and two smaller shuttles, deployed for the trial via the Ride Now Sentosa mobile app or at booking kiosks located along a 5.7km route.

The public trial service complemented existing on-island transportation network and enhanced on-demand connectivity and accessibility for visitors, whilst providing key insights on development of AV technology for future deployments in public transportation.

In its sixth year now, SCAPA 2020 recognises the progress Asia Pacific municipalities have made and provide a forum to help accelerate smart city development in the region. Winners were decided based on IDC analysts’ benchmarking, public voting, and judging from an International Advisory Council.
