In a field where precision can mean the difference between safety and risk, Senior Engineer Nicole Kwek plays a vital role in ensuring that every round of ammunition performs reliably. Based in the Ammunition Services division at ST Engineering’s Land Systems business, she leads a team of technicians in conducting ammunition and ballistics testing, specialised ammunition investigations and other advanced ammunition services. Her work combines precision engineering with emerging technologies to uphold the highest standards of safety and performance, from visual inspections and chemical analysis to rigorous munition testing.
“There’s something uniquely meaningful about knowing that my work helps ensure the safety and reliability of every round that goes out — especially when we’re using advanced tools like high-speed cameras and advanced data analytics to push the boundaries of precision.”
Q: How do you ensure that each round is ready for the field?
Every round I test is put through a series of checks. We use high-speed cameras to track how projectiles behave in full flight, X-ray imaging to check ammunition readiness, and advanced technologies like automation and machine learning to deliver smarter, data-driven insights for more precise quality testing. This combination gives me confidence that every round leaving our facility meets the highest standards.
Q: Why do you want to work in ST Engineering?
It’s not every day you get to work with explosives and cutting-edge technology in a role that challenges and inspires you. As a female in a technical role, I feel the need to prove myself but I’m fortunate to work in a place where gender doesn’t define capability. I’ve always felt respected and supported to lead and grow.
Q: What does a typical day look like for you?
No two days are the same! I take on different short-term assignments, and I’m often out in testing labs or at outdoor ranges. I also get to travel for overseas projects, which adds another layer of learning and exposure. It’s hands-on, dynamic, and constantly evolving. That variety keeps me engaged and gives me a strong sense of accomplishment when we deliver on a project.
Q: Outside of engineering, you also represent Singapore in national hockey. How has ST Engineering supported you in balancing both commitments?
It’s been incredibly encouraging. My managers and teammates have shown a lot of support for my national hockey commitments—adjusting schedules for training, recovery or travel for tournaments. That flexibility has allowed me to fully pursue both my passions in national hockey and ammunition testing. It’s empowering to work in a place that values not just what you do at work, but who you are beyond it.
