Career growth doesn’t always mean moving on – it can also mean moving forward with the right support. For Ethan Kuch, Principal Engineer in Advanced Manufacturing under the Advanced Networks & Sensors line of business at our Digital Systems division, mentorship made all the difference.
Today, he leads production for mission-critical electronics modules that support defence operations, proving that real impact begins with being part of something greater.
Q: What do you do at work, and how did you get here?
I started a decade ago as a test engineer, working on satellite communication boards. Over time, I was given opportunities to learn and lead. Now, I oversee advanced manufacturing projects that produce high-performance electronics components for platforms on ships, planes, and even in space!
Q: Tell us about a moment of mentorship or support that shaped your career.
In 2021, I was eager to advance my expertise in AI and intelligent systems. I was considering leaving to pursue a master’s degree, but my business unit (BU) chief offered a different path – sponsoring my studies through ST Engineering’s internal programme. His support allowed me to balance work and study commitments, and I completed my Master of Technology in Intelligent Systems from the National University of Singapore in two years. I’m now better equipped to explain AI and predictive analytics solutions to our customers.
Q: Was the transition from engineer to project manager tough?
It was definitely a steep learning curve. I sought advice from senior project managers, used platforms like LinkedIn Learning, and received strong guidance from my deputy BU chief. When I faced challenges – especially with customers – she would step in, model how to approach the problem, and share her past experiences. That kind of support made a big difference.
Q: What’s most rewarding about your role?
I’m managing a team where everyone is older than me. While this was daunting at first, it pushed me to become a better leader. For me, leadership isn’t just about timelines, tasks, or targets – it’s about taking care of your team, ensuring they’re safe, respected, and equipped to succeed. Watching my team thrive and deliver project after project is the most fulfilling part of my job. Just as I’ve had great mentors who guided me in my career, I aim to be the same for those I lead.
Be part of a team that prizes innovation and teamwork.
