For Toh Wei Jun, a move from aircraft maintenance to freighter leasing was not a departure from his engineering roots, but an opportunity to apply them in a broader commercial context.
Today, as an Assistant Manager in freighter leasing within ST Engineering’s Aviation Asset Management business, Wei Jun’s shopfloor experience finds new value in the world of asset management, where technical expertise, stakeholder engagement and commercial acumen come together to support customers throughout the aircraft lifecycle.
Q: What inspired you to move from aircraft maintenance into freighter leasing?
It inspired me to make the leap to the leasing business, as I wanted to build on my skillset and understand how deals are structured, while being positioned closer to commercial decision-making.
Q: What does your work in Aviation Asset Management involve today?
My work encompasses the full lifecycle of a freighter aircraft lease, from origination to delivery. This includes identifying leasing opportunities, undertaking pricing and commercial evaluation, marketing the freighter to potential lessees, handling lease negotiations and more.
Q: How has your technical background helped you in your current commercial role?
While it was a huge jump to go from a technical role to one that requires commercial judgment and taking the lead in transactions, my technical knowhow, understanding of aircraft operations and customer management experience proved invaluable in my new role. It allows me to clearly communicate with lessees, align customers and internal teams, and provide practical insights when evaluating deals.
Q: What was the biggest adjustment you had to make?
Previously, when liaising with engineers and technicians, I was very direct and technical, focusing on execution and solving specific aircraft issues. In my present customer-facing role, I have to tailor how I communicate to different audiences and focus on how I present myself professionally.
Looking ahead, I want to deepen my commercial and financial skills so I can contribute more strategically to the freighter leasing business.
