As an Engineer in ST Engineering's Marine business, Engineer Ong Jing Ting supports the design and development of Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs). Working across disciplines ranging from marine systems and electrical engineering to software and unmanned technologies, she helps bring complex systems together into a single operational platform.
Having joined ST Engineering as an intern before transitioning into a full-time role, Jing Ting shares how this journey has shaped her growth as an engineer.
Q: Can you tell us more about your role at ST Engineering??
I support the design and development of Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs) through systems integration across multiple engineering disciplines, including Hull, Marine Systems, Electrical Systems, Software, Sensors and Unmanned Systems. My role involves translating customer and operational requirements into vessel design considerations and technical solutions, while working with suppliers and stakeholders to ensure system compatibility and compliance.
Q: Can you share a project that has been particularly meaningful for you?
One project I am currently involved in is an Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) programme, where I support system-level design and integration activities across multiple engineering disciplines.
The project requires coordination across Hull, Marine Systems, Electrical Systems, Software and Unmanned Systems to deliver an operational unmanned vessel platform. Unlike a specialist role focused on a single subsystem, I need to understand how all the systems interact and influence one another.
Being involved in the design and review of multiple systems has also given me a broader appreciation of the vessel as a complete platform rather than viewing it through the lens of a single discipline.
Q: What skills are most important for success in your field?
Systems thinking is essential because it helps you understand how different subsystems interact and affect overall performance. Adaptability is also important, as it's common to move between technical reviews, customer engagements, management coordination and project deliverables within the same day.
Q: What do you enjoy outside of work?
I enjoy running to stay active and clear my mind, and I also serve in my church’s Children's Ministry, where I help teach and engage young children.
Serving in Children’s Ministry has taught me patience, communication, empathy and active listening, which I find equally valuable when working with colleagues, customers and stakeholders.
